Green Sanctuary Task Force
Green Sanctuary Task Force members explore ways of reducing the ecological footprint of the UU Church of Bloomington, the congregation and the broader community. Members form working groups for in-depth study, which they present to the task force and to the greater congregation. Some of the highlights of the last few years:
The GSTF created a list of monthly tasks that UUCB households could tackle to bring down their own household energy consumption including; setting the thermostat lower in winter, insulating hot water heaters, and drying clothes on a laundry line. This program has been used by congregations across Indiana through Hoosier Interfaith Power and Light, and was adapted for secular use by the Monroe County Energy Challenge. Sometimes we got confused between Habit, Hobbit, and Hopper of the month.
The church's heating has been divided into zones which allows us to only heat the parts of the building in use. A gentle reminder helps people remember to turn down the heat and close the doors.
The UUCB promotes earth-saving way to get to services: walking, biking, carpooling...
